Micro Carvings

A distillation of a distillation.

Off cuts from larger pieces of work, utilizing the whole whale (the whole tree)

These carvings have allowed the audience and collectors to have personal talismans and pocket pieces. With their ease of portability due to their compact size and the larger story connected to these pieces, many have found their way onto alters and the sacred places unique to the beholder.

These micro carvings have become the first calling card for Koa Stevens, starting way back in 2005 when he was just a young tree and with no way to contact him other than something folks in Hawaii refer to as “the coconut wireless” (the psychic connection or synchronicity). He has since handed out these gifts and tokens of tactile cultural nuances to 11,000 + people between him and his father. Their gift of networking and being the adventurous artisans they are, wherever they go, these two have been sharing their mana and what lights them up, bringing art and culture into the hands of those whom are lucky to cross their paths.

These micro carvings are the stuff of legends. Turning into a ‘quick-fish slow-fish’ project, a future blog in the making. With the aim and goal of this community blog to focus on reuniting the “how and when and where” these thousands of folks, whom have met Koa and Tonu along their artistic journey and what type of experiential impact this had on them. Did they pop out of a tree in the middle of the redwoods and you were left with a carved avocado pit or a pocket tiki that now protects your vehicle while it is parked. There are so many people to unite and have the story unfold on piece at a time. And we are curious to hear the boomerang call and response.

Until this networking blog is created, we have here a mini gallery to honor the micro carvings and their special place in this carving lineage.
